Kings Park in Bournemouth is set for a million pound football makeover, transforming into one of the best sports complexes in the region, thanks to a funding partnership between the UK’s largest sports charity, the Football Foundation and Bournemouth Borough Council.

The Foundation has provided a massive £748,000 grant to provide a new pavilion, housing six changing rooms alongside three new full sized grass pitches and four mini soccer pitches. The cash will also allow the council to start construction on a new floodlit artificial turf pitch, allowing more football all year round, whatever the weather.

We would like to thank Hampshire F.A. for their support of the project. The development will expand on the links between local football associations, schools, clubs and AFC Bournemouth’s Football in the Community programmes.” Councillor Angela Manton, Cabinet Member whose responsibilities include sport and recreation, commented, “ this is an exciting project for Bournemouth. It will bring much needed high quality facilities to Kings Park and together with the newly refurbished athletic stadium, make Kings Park a premier centre for sport in the region. The project will provide a wonderful opportunity to promote the development of football at all levels of the game.”

The development of football in the area has been limited due the lack of grass pitches, changing facilities and floodlit artificial pitches. However, it is expected almost 1000 players of all ages and abilities will use the new facilities every week. A special emphasis will be placed on creating opportunities for girls and women’s football and disabled players to play every week. Links will also be developed with both primary and secondary schools who will use the site for games lessons, coaching and after school matches.

The Foundation is dedicated to revitalising the grass roots of the game, constructing modern football facilities, developing football as a force for social cohesion and as a vehicle for education in communities throughout the country. Funded by the Premier League, the Football Association and the Government, the Football Foundation is the nation's largest sports charity having already funded projects worth over £200m.

Foundation, Chief Executive Peter Lee, welcomed this latest funding for grass roots football:
“This superb new community facility is set to the lead the development of game in the area. Footballers regardless of gender or ability deserve the type of infrastructure that will soon be available at Kings Park.”
