 Junior ResultsJunior Team County Championships 2007/8 Season - 2nd Weekend Results 26th January 2008 Bedfordshire Juniors started the second day in 2nd place in their division.Imandeep Sehmbi (No 1) was available this time and Ben Gardner and James Coleman were retained after their good performances in the 1st round. Dom Wilson was not unhappy about being left out, as he could play football for the school team instead. The girls were the same as before. Convincing victories over Norfolk 8-2 and Cambridgeshire 7-3 meant that we were guaranteed 2nd place overall, which would be our best result for many years! The last match was against Essex 3, who had won all their matches to this point and lead the division. The equation was thus quite simple: a victory for us would ensure 1st place, any other result and we were 2nd. Over the first 7 games, Essex just gained the advantage to lead 4-3 and must have fancied their chances of gaining another win to take first place. However, Imandeep despite losing the first set to their No 1, took the next 3 sets to level the score at 4-4. Then Ben Gardner beat the No 3, also 3-1 after losing the first set, to edge us in front 5-4. The final match was a girl’s singles, Venus Wu Yan on the table for us. Remarkably she also lost the first set, before winning 3-1 to give us a 6-4 final result and the division title. All the players made a significant contribution to the team’s performance, both on the table and helping with advice between sets. Overall it was a magnificent team effort which brought our first junior team title for over 20 years, I think for the first time since the days of the Bellingers and the Bowlers!!! |
