Bridgwater Lawn Tennis Club was established on the banks of the Bridgwater canal in the centre of Bridgwater in about 1895. Originally known as the Trinity Lawn Tennis Club it had one grass court and club rules limited membership to 25. Before the First World War it acquired a second court, created a 'country membership' and the standard of tennis attracted members from Bishops Lydeard who push-biked over the Quantocks of an evening - and home again! Later known as the 'Mid-Somerset' it became the Bridgwater Lawn Tennis Club during the sixties.
When Safeway built a new supermarket on the site formerly occupied by the Lido, Bridgwater & Albion RFC and the tennis club, our share of the proceeds of the sale helped to pay for our new site. The club has five (5) courts - 3 all-weather 'Astroturf ' which are floodlit and two American fast clay courts, the latter funded with a grant from the Lottery Commission. This year is our 11th Anniversary.
The club has been very successful in local leagues over the years and boasts among its members a current young contender for International Honours.
We have built up a thriving Junior Membership and we are justifiably proud of the high standard of coaching offered to local youngsters and of the links with that have been made with local schools
We now have a lovely clubhouse with excellent shower and changing facilities and have been able to keep our membership dues at a very competitive level.
Our combination of all-weather courts and economical and efficient floodlighting means that we offer a locally unique facility. For our hardiest members, Thursday night is Club Night, literally all the year round!
The Club operates on an open basis - there are no ‘playing in’ tests - and welcomes people who enjoy playing tennis to whatever standard. There are no stuffy regulations about clothing colour!
