Introduction to Surfing and the British Surfing Association

Surfers have been riding waves in the Pacific Ocean for over 2,000 years however it was not until Captain Cook visited Hawaii in the 17th Century, and recorded the activities of the local surfers, that people outside the region became aware of the sport. Partly beacause of Captain Cooks reports and partly due to the quality and quantity of the surf Hawaii is considered to be the “spiritual home” of surfing and has some of the biggest and best waves in the World.

Great Britain may not have the same climate as Hawaii but we do have plenty of surf and many dedicated surfers at locations from Lands End to John o’ Groats. To become an expert surfer may take many years however a great deal of enjoyment can be had by people of all ages and abilities right from their very first session.

3 easy steps to Safe, Satisfying, Surfing

  1. Attend a surfing course at a BSA Recognised Surf School which use BSA Level 1 Accredited Coaches. 90% of beginners will be standing up and riding in their first 3 hour lesson.
  2. Once you have learnt the basic techniques, go surfing as often as you can in the best waves you can find. (You’ll want to do this anyway !)
  3. Join the BSA and help us to protect surfing breaks, water quality and access to beaches for current and future generations of surfers.

The BSA’s produces the Guide to Surfing in Britain which lists all the best surfing beaches around Britain’s coasts and contains plenty of helpful information about surfboards, wetsuits and other aspects of the sport.

The Guide can be obtained by sending a cheque or postal order for £3.95 (which includes post and packing) to the BSA office.
