About the RYA
The RYA was formed as the Yacht Racing Association in 1875 to harmonise the right-of-way and handicap rules for yacht racing.
Since then the focus of the Association has extended to encompass the views of all water users under sail or power, and just after WW2, the word "Racing" was justifiably dropped. Then in 1952 the "Royal" title was granted, to form the Royal Yachting Association, or the "RYA" as it is commonly known today.
RYA policy is managed by its Council and a series of expert committees. These are almost exclusively occupied by volunteers who give large amounts of their time to helping the RYA, and it is these people who generate the policy and direction of the RYA.
'RYA House' at Hamble provides office space for the 90 plus staff of the RYA, who conduct the day to day affairs and management of the Association. In a typical day, RYA House will receive over 800 phone calls and between 800-1000 pieces of mail.
Of course, the RYA isn't the building or even the staff within it. It is you, the boating public, to whom the RYA belongs. The RYA depends on the subscriptions of its 95,000 Personal Members and the affiliations of the 1580 clubs. It is only by support from grass roots level that the RYA can be a truly independent body in representing your interests. If you are already a Personal Member then 'Thank-you'. If not, why don't you consider joining?
