History
Construction of Pavilion Field
After almost two years of negotiations, grant aid applications and site surveys, the construction of a new custom built baseball facility was finally under way for Brighton Baseball Club.
An agreement was reached in conjunction with Brighton Borough Council and Brighton Rugby Club for the new facility to be constructed at the Rugby Club site at Waterhall Valley on the outskirts of Brighton.
As planning applications were passed in the early part of January 1996, work finally got under way and a construction site was born with heavy plant being moved onto the site in order to excavate over 50 tonnes of soil and chalk from the ground. With safety fencing in place behind the diamond, the foundations were excavated for the dugouts and the giant J.C.B diggers were then removed from the site enabling the bricklayers to move in and commence work.
Within one week the shell of both dugouts were completed and the carpentry work was able to get under way starting with the roof. Both of the buildings were then fully weatherproofed and work was able to start on the internal fixtures and fittings such as benches, internal doors, helmet racks, clothes hooks etc.
Whilst all this was going, more machinery, albeit lighter was removed onto the site in order to excavate the base areas to help accommodate ballast, shingle and around 20 tonnes of clay soil.
On May 12th 1996 Pavilion Field was born and the club currently boasts one of the finest facilities in Great Britain helped by the other amenities on site. This includes the superb Clubhouse overlooking the field with full changing/shower facilities, fully equipped treatment room, licensed bar and catering facilities, conference areas, pool table and players car park.
Brighton Baseball Club now holds a 21 year licence for full use of the site until August 2017 at which point the club can apply to have the licence renewed.
The development of the site is on going and the club hopes to upgrade the spectator facilities including the installation of seating behind home plate and down the first base line.
