Welcome to John O'Gaunt
In beautiful Mid- Bedfordshire countryside, about two-thirds of the way along the B1040 from Biggleswade to Potton, and laid out on both sides of the road, you will find John O'Gaunt Golf Club. John O'Gaunt has to be one of the premier private Golf Clubs in southern England.
With its 36 Hole complex now matured into two golf courses of quite differing degrees of difficulty, John O'Gaunt is the envy of most visitors. The clubhouse, the stately home of the Burgoyne family for so many years, obviously has a tremendous historical ambience which the golf club has managed to maintain to a remarkable degree. In doing so, however, it still provides excellent modern facilities for its members and visitors.
In 1993 the English Golf Union successfully held the English Seniors Championship over the John O'Gaunt course. The Championship is due to return in 2004.
John O'Gaunt Course
The John O'Gaunt course is a magnificent example of parkland golf and undoubtedly one of the finest in the country.
A gently undulating terrain, with eighteen golf holes full of interest and character. The beautiful trees on the course are worthy of special mention. Stately cedars, towering limes, limes oaks, weeping willows, a wonderful variety of pines all combine to provide a superb backdrop to the tees, fairways and greens. A slow moving river winds its way across the fairways of four holes providing an excellent water feature.
The course is a true test of golf and certainly no pushover. John O'Gaunt is a top quality golf course which has matured naturally over many years thus providing players with carpet-like fairways and true greens.
Carthagena Course
The Carthagena course provides a wonderful contrast to the John O'Gaunt course with much larger greens, longer tees and a soil which drains very quickly. Initially there were nine holes, opened in 1972, with the complete eighteen playable in 1980.
All eighteen holes were constructed by the club's own green staff, an achievement unheard of in today's highly mechanised, sophisticated golf course planning. At the height of the playing season the greens are fast and true, the fairways immaculate and from the back tees certainly the course is no "soft touch".
Carthagena is an excellent all year round golf course which is easy walking and a pleasure to play, yet still provides a challenge for golfers of all abilities.
