Leaving the M25 at junction 11 and heading along St Peters Way towards Addlestone, motorists glancing left are treated to their first view of green since joining the motorway - Abbey Moor Golf Course. Situated in Green Lane, Addlestone, designed by David Walker and opened five years ago, this nine hole, pay-as-you-play course has become one of the most popular in Surrey and the surrounding area. Built in a low lying meadowland area, drainage was a primary consideration when the course was designed. Large teeing areas, large greens together with excellent drainage have ensured that the course is playable in all but the most severe conditions. During the very wet winter of 1994/95 the course was only closed on three days due to rain, and temporary greens, the biggest moan amongst golfers in the 19th hole, were never used - a record in Surrey, if not the country. The head Greenkeeper, Andrew Wooders, who was involved in building the course, and his team, are continually working on the course to improve it, both from a playing point of view and aesthetically. The 2571 yard, par 34 course has to serve the needs of the novice, as well as the 350+ members of Abbey Moor Golf Club. The course presents a challenge for the novice and seasoned golfer alike. A slightly mishit tee shot will not land the player in a position from where a par is unachievable, but a clever layout and strategically placed hazards make the course surprisingly difficult for the low handicapper looking for birdies.
