Our Gliders
If you're serious about learning to glide it's important that you are not limited by the aircraft that you fly (or fleet availability). The London Gliding Club has one of the UK's largest fleets of modern high performance gliders. Five Schleicher ASK21's form the backbone of the fleet and most gliding lessons are flown in this aircraft. Graceful in appearance, this tough and manoeuvrable glider is ideal for all aspects of training.
The club also owns a motor glider and Duo Discus for cross country training and an ASK13 for spin awareness tuition. Qualified pilots have a choice of 3 single seater ASK23's, an ASW24 or a Pilatus B4 for aerobatics. Many members have their own gliders, over 100 of which are based at the LGC.

Learning to fly may be something you've always wanted to do, or you may be looking for a new challenge in life. If so, join the Club. You'll be amongst a group of like-minded people, in a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
It is not an expensive pastime. Annual membership of the London Gliding Club is less than many Golf Clubs or Health Clubs. Once you are a member you can fly whenever you like, 364 days a year. You pay for your launch and time in the air and your instruction is free.

History
The London Gliding Club was officially inaugurated on February 20th 1930. When the club started using nearby Ivinghoe Beacon as a launch site the spectacle attracted so much public attention that the club were evicted for "spoiling it's peaceful enjoyment by the public". The club (and the crowds) then moved to our current home at Dunstable Downs.
Before the war pilots flying along the hill had instructions relayed to them by flag signals for "too fast" and "too slow"! The glider repair man of the time was said to be able to produce an estimate based purely on the sound of the crash! However prangs were balanced with successes. In 1939 Geoffrey Stephenson was the first to glide across the Channel when he flew all the way from Dunstable to France!
