Bangor Lawn Tennis Club was formed at an inaugural meeting held at Ward Hall on 21 December 1899. Courts were opened on Saturday 9 June 1900 and over the next number of years the Club established itself as one of the top Clubs in Northern Ireland.
While formed as Bangor Lawn Tennis Club it was known locally as "Downshire" because of its original location on the Downswhire Road. After the First World War ownership of the ground on which the courts had been built changed hands and the Club moved to its present location at Farnham Park.
The Club has always been known for its innovation and was among the first Clubs to run dances at weekends on its premises. It is also interesting to note that during the 40's the Club staged an exhibition match between Fred Perry and Dan Maskell, two well known names from the world of tennis and in many ways pioneers of the professional age in tennis.
Today the Club has 5 excellent courts 3 of which have had up to date floodlighting installed in 2003. The Club continues to look to the future and has an ongoing Development Plan which will ensure that its facilities are upgraded and extended out into the future.
