On Guard Combat Systems is the result of the sixty years combined experience in martial arts and frontline security accumulated by instructors Neal and Desmond Martin.
OGCS came from a desire to have a complete combat system that gave its practitioners all the skills they needed to afford themselves complete personal protection and peace of mind when it came to dealing with acts of aggression and violence.
OGCS is a three-tiered system of Combatives, Combat Jujitsu and Combat Fitness. All three systems can be practiced independently of each other, although there is always an overlap between the three.
The techniques we teach at On Guard are meant only for one thing: for use in real violent encounters and not in competition or such like. Our only concern is teaching people how to deal with actual violence on the street, in the workplace or in the home.
Every technique we teach has been pressure tested by us in real life encounters or by others in the security and combatives field. A lot of the techniques have been around for a long time and have stood the test of time for a reason- they work! Other techniques have only recently been developed and represent the cutting edge of self protection training.
What is On Guard Combat Systems’ Goal?
Our goals are very simple.
First and foremost we want to provide you with the skills and knowledge you will need to deal with any act of random aggression or violence, be it a street assault, a road rage attack, home invasion, rape or other. We will provide you with all the tools you need to protect yourself in these types of situations. Of course nothing is certain. Anything can and will happen in these kinds of violent situations. But with the proper training, which we provide, you should be mentally and physically equipped to handle anything that comes your way.
Secondly we are committed to passing on the philosophy and values that have under-pinned the martial arts for so many years. Our goal is personal empowerment as much as personal protection, which means developing your confidence and personal power, as well as teaching the value of respect, honour and humility and peace towards your fellow man. Just because we deal in violence doesn’t mean we have to be thugs along with it. We are not so condescending that we talk down to people about these things, but rather we allow these values to be developed through the training. You could call them fringe benefits.
What do we teach exactly?
What we teach are REAL COMBAT TECHNIQUES, techniques that are in use by military operatives and front-line security operatives across the globe. In essence, what we teach is not for sport or competition, but brutal violence designed to stop any assault on your person, whatever the threat level. Traditional martial arts techniques may be good for some, but in general, not so good for say a small woman trying to defend against a much larger and stronger man. Most of what we teach can be used by anyone, no matter what size they happen to be or how strong they happen to be.
We teach you the tools, tactics, targets and behavioural/mental aspects required for you to escape with your life and person still intact. We will teach you how to survive the most common types of violent encounters you may come across, whether on your feet, on the ground, against a weapon or against multiple attackers. Our approach to training is gritty and realistic and a world away from traditional martial arts training and techniques. What works isn’t often pretty to look at!
Having said that, we do also offer a full Kempo Jujitsu syllabus for those who want to go down the traditional martial arts path and grade within the belt system. Jujitsu is a great art to learn and is also very practical, which means it acts as a great support system to the bread and butter system of Combatives. You will learn how to throw, apply joint locks, how to break-fall properly and how to strike properly. The Combat Jujitsu techniques that we teach are a stripped down and more lethal version of the Kempo techniques.
We would also add here that we don
