About the Centre

Formerly known as Bassingbourn Ski Centre, and serving the people of South Cambridgeshire, North Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Essex, Bassingbourn Snowsports Centre is located on the A1198, 3 miles north of Royston and 12 miles south-west of Cambridge.

Although run and maintained entirely by civilians who are Members of Bassingbourn Snowsports Club, the Centre is actually located within the Bassingbourn Army Training Regiment Barracks. It is therefore the best guarded dry-slope ski club in the World (probably!)

Bassingbourn is one of very few UK ski and snowsports clubs to have it’s own slope - most others pay heavily to use commercially run sites. As a result, Bassingbourn fees and memberships only have to cover costs - there are no permanent employees or shareholders. This makes us by far the least expensive option for skiing and boarding in the area.

The Centre runs private and group lessons and courses for both Members and non-Members – ranging from Beginners to Advanced grades - using fully qualified Club, ASSI and BASI Instructors. We specialise in teaching School Parties in preparation for the School Ski Trip…. All lessons are given on Carving Skis and equipment use is included in the cost.

The Main Slope is 100m long, with a maximum gradient of 20 degrees, and has a Poma button lift to speed skiers to the top.

The Training Slope is 45m long with a maximum gradient of 16 degrees, and has a rope tow, so beginners spend less time walking and more time skiing as their skill increases!

Both slopes are floodlit, so that they can be fully utilised during the Winter months. There is a large Clubhouse for kitting-up, along with a rest area with comfortable seating and tables - and a shop selling tea, coffee, Tuck Shop snacks and cold drinks.

The Club is open to Members on Wednesday evenings and all day Sunday in High season, Wednesday evening and Sunday mornings in Mid Season, and Wednesday evenings in the Summer months. Members are entitled to free use of Club ski equipment during these periods – or they can bring their own if they wish.

The Club is also open to non-Members on Sundays and one hour group taster ski lessons are available to get you going, but because of its Military Location you must book in advance. Click here to find out how!

Junior Club Members (for children up to 17) meet on Saturday afternoons from the beginning of September to the end of April, where Membership gives them up to one hour of group instruction and some free ski time as well as free loan of equipment for their session.

Snowboarding Members meet weekly - and help and advice are available for beginners and experienced Boarders alike. Boarding Membership now entitles boarding on Sundays. Details of the new weekly meeting times will be available soon.

The Club has an active Race Team that competes in the Eastern Region Summer League, with some individual members competing in National and International races. Race Training sessions are held Friday nights.

Freestyle training can be given on a Private Lesson basis with a qualified Instructor - who competes in national events.

The slope can be booked for parties - for both children and adults alike. These can be 1 hour toboggan parties, 2 hours of skiing - or a 2 hour mixture of both! The Centre provides the Supervisor/Instructor - you supply the fun....

Slope Hire is available at non-Club times for Corporate Events, schools, scouts and guides and other groups. Included in the cost will be at least one Bassingbourn Instructor/Supervisor who will be on the slope during the hire period to ensure skier safety and to give guidance.

The Club is always doing new things!
