Who are we?

The National Federation of Anglers (NFA) is one of the country's largest sporting bodies. It is responsible for administration at both national and regional level of one of the most popular participative outdoor recreational activities, looking after the interests of over 500 affiliated organisations and through them, nearly 250,000 individual coarse anglers.

The NFA was formed in 1903 by a group of forward-thinking environmentally aware anglers who were concerned about the adverse effects which water pollution, abstraction and land drainage were having on their inheritance.

It is a sad indictment of the disregard which industry, commerce and society as a whole have for the environment that these three evils still pose the major threat to the enjoyment of the countryside by today's anglers.

Much of thework of the NFA is involved in campaigningfor a more environmentally responsible society, and in liasing with both National Government and statutory bodiessuch as the Environment Agency, to bring this about.

The NFA is also a leader in the European Anglers' Alliance which was formed in 1994 to maintain a watchful eye on European legislative proposals likely to affect either angling or the environment, and to press the European Parliament to enact legislation aimed at protecting the aquatic environment and the rights of anglers.

The NFA is recognised as this country's most important voice in coarse angling. Its views are sought by Government Officials, environmental organisations, the Sports council, the EA, and on an almost daily basis by all sections of the media.
