Member NewsDSE - SportsJunior Swimmers make a splash in SheffieldBy Sarah Marl
Over 200 disabled swimmers from across the country collated at Ponds Forge, Sheffield over the weekend and exhibited the finest junior swimming ever seen in the history of DSE Swimming events. 6 World, 2 European and over 200 National records were smashed at the event, which was held at Ponds Forge for the first time ever. It has previously been held at Darlington Dolphin Swimming Centre, but had to be moved due to overwhelming entry demand. We wondered how the juniors would handle such a pool and atmosphere, which is one of the finest stages for swimming in the world. However, the 10-18 year olds were not fazed by it at all and relished in the new relocation. It now joins the Long and Short Course Swimming events in Sheffield. Amongst the stars, Rhiannon Henry, who is visually impaired, cleared 2 world records and David Hill proved that he is a swimmer to watch. It was officially announced that Nationwide will be sponsoring the REGIONAL SWIMMING GALAS this year. They also began the 2003 Junior Sports Awards at this event with 4 Junior Swimmers receiving bursaries for talent development. They were: - Rachel Latham (2002 winner- continuing her success) Rhiannon Henry (2001 winner) North West team reconfirmed their status in swimming glory, taking the Team Trophy once again. The event was successfully organised by Janette Fenwick in Pat Bennett's absence. Pat is seriously ill in hospital at the present time, but has been an essential force behind the success of disability swimming in this country. We are sure you will join us in sending Pat our best wishes.
