Glasgow Grand Prix & World Cup Update

The Entry List for the 2004 Glasgow Grand Prix & World Cup event, to be held on October 29th-31st, reads four fresh Olympic Champions from Athens 2004: the Ukrainian Valery Goncharov (on P.Bars) and the Japanese Team gold medallists Hiroyiki Tomita, Takehiro Kashima and Isao Yoneda.

The twice World Champion on Floor and Rings Jordan Jovchev from Bulgaria, Silver on Rings and Bronze on Floor in Athens, will also be competing at the Kelvin Hall together with his young team mate Philip Yanev, Olympic Finalist on Vault (5th) and winner of the last World Cup Qualifier in Chile.

The women’s List is now enriched with the names of the current European Champion Alina Kozich from Ukraine and the 2003 World Champion on Vault Oxana Chussovitina from Uzbekistan. The double Olympic Champion on A. Bars, Svetlana Khorkina form Russia has pulled out of both the events in Glasgow and Ghent (the following weekend).

The names of the British gymnasts to compete in Glasgow were also announced. These are the four times National champion Beth Tweddle (Liverpool), who will compete on A. Bars and Beam (possibly also on Floor), the 2004 British Olympian Cherrelle Fennell (Wigan)- on Vault and A. Bars, the current British Champion Ross Brewer (Sutton)- on Pommels and young prodigy David Massam (South Essex)- on Rings.

Together with the other star-gymnasts from Australia, China, France, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Kazakhstan, Russia and Slovenia, to name but a few of the competing nations, the field for Glasgow promises to be a most exciting Gymnastics Gala-competition! The BBC will cover the event live on Saturday, October 30 from 2.45pm and then from 3.55pm and on Sunday, October 31 from 2.15pm, realising in total no less than three hours programme presented by Hazel Irvin, assisted by the 2000 British Olympian Craig Heap.
