Cayton Bay, Scarborough 2/11/02 Harris strikes back

Mark Harris charged in epic conditions on the east coast to take the £1200 Cayton Challenge and put his tour title back on track. The surf was classic, in the four to six foot range and perfectly clean, but a smaller than expected entry from local surfers was supplemented by pro riders travelling up from Cornwall and Wales. The step in class was evident during the heats as first Nathan Phillips tore into the classic waves getting a 9.8 (out of 10) in the quarter finals then Alan Stokes bagged a perfect ten for a sick barrel and nice hack in the semis.

The final was held at high tide at Bunkers in the best waves of the tour this year and pitted Stokes and Harris against Headworx team riders Nathan Phillips and Llewellyn Whitaker. Stokes had the perfect start with another barrel that was in the excellent range but fell or got caught by the other tubes he tried to ride, Nathan had the crowd hooting with an audacious air but failed to land it and couldn’t find the waves that connected through to the inside. Whittaker’s backhand attack was so committed and aggressive he was shifting bucket-fulls of water from the lip in each turn but Harris was focused and chose the best waves and carved them all the way to the beach winning easily with three high scoring rides.

The win keeps Harris at the top of the ratings but Stokes is still in touch and it’s all set up for an exciting final event at Croyde in North Devon next weekend.

In the C Skin Longboard Challenge local surfers dominated with Tom Coleman taking the title with an epic wave in the later stages of the heat. Second place went to Karl McKirdy, third Chris Ireland and fourth Steve Hendon.
