Local Olympic and Paralympic Stars Visit Largest County Youth Sport Event

On Saturday 20th May Gail Emms (Badminton, Olympic Silver Medallist), Rebecca Romero (Rowing, Olympic Gold Medallist) and Ian Rose (Judo, Paralympic Silver Medallist) attended the inaugural Bucks Youth Games - the largest youth sport event ever to take place in the county.

The Bucks Youth Games took place at four venues across the Wycombe District including Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre. The Games involved 700 participants (aged 12-14 yrs) in almost 100 teams representing the 5 Bucks Local Authorities in 11 sports and included events for young people with disabilities.

The Games form part of the work of the Bucks & Milton Keynes Sports Partnership, a network of local agencies working together to increase participation and improve levels of performance in sport .  The Games particularly aim to encourage young people to take part in more sport and to join local sports clubs.  Prior to the Games, all five Local Authorities worked closely with local schools and clubs to recruit and provide training opportunities for young people.

Winners of each event (see attached list) were announced at a closing ceremony by Paul Dickinson, BBC commentator, and an overall fair play trophy was awarded to the teams from
Milton Keynes for demonstrating excellent standards of sportsmanship.

Lee Mason (Director, Bucks & Milton Keynes Sports Partnership) commented
“the first ever Bucks Youth Games was a great success.  Young people from across the county clearly had a great time and were enthused to continue their involvement in sport.  The event provided a showcase of the excellent work done throughout the year by the sports development officers, coaches, officials and volunteers from our Local Authorities, sports associations, clubs and schools to whom we are very grateful”“.
