Singapore nets second silver title
26th August 2006Singapore secured its second silver medal on Day Two of the 8 th Asian Karate-do Federation Junior and Cadet Championships with Ng Pei Ru playing second fiddle in the Junior Female Individual Kumite 60kg and above event.
Defending champion Arai Ayaka from Japan proved that she was too strong and was in her element as she defeated Singapore's only finalist in the competition today.
Ng, who is making her debut in an international karate-do tournament said: "This is the first time I'm competing against a Japanese competitor and they are certainly in a league of their own and it was difficult to read and pre-empt their moves. I didn't expect to win any medal in this tournament as I'm just recovering from an ankle sprain sustained two months ago. Nonetheless, I'm quite proud of my achievement today."
Singapore Head Coach Francis Hong is also pleased with the performance of the six- member team today, though they only won one medal as compared to the three medals achieved on Day One.
Hong added: "It was the first international outing for all of our athletes today and their achievements are encouraging. All of our four male exponents, Lee Jiawei, Subadevan s/o Mahadevan, Teo Heng Bin, Basil Goh, were only defeated in their second or third matches, while only one of our girls, Sim Chiew Hong was knocked out during her first match.
And of course, Ng Pei Ru clinched a silver for us today. We had only expected a bronze from her but are pleased that she surpassed our expectations."
All Singapore's medal achievements have so far been achieved only by the female athletes in the Cadet Female Individual Kata (Bronze- Ng Pei Yi), Junior Female Individual Kata (Silver – Adeline Liew), Female Team Kata (Ng Pei Yi, Adeline Liew, Natalie Tan) and Junior Female Individual Kumite 60kg and above (Ng Pei Ru).
Powerhouse Japan continued their winning streak with six wins out of seven at today's finals, amassing a total of 11 medals within two days of competition.
Other wins include Iran securing their two golds in the Cadet Male kumite events. Vahid Hassnipour beat Alkha Thami Fahad for the Cadet Male Individual Kumite below 55kg title while compatriot Keivan Arzan Zarrin defeated Kuwait's Ameer Saleh in the Cadet Male Individual Kumite below 65kg.
Malaysia's G. Yugneswary also won the Junior Female Individual Kumite below 48kg against Kazakhstan's Bekzjanova Sholpan.
Tomorrow's (Day Three) tournament will feature Junior Male Individual Kumite and Junior Male Team Kumite events. Competition will commence at 9am with the finals played at approximately at 2pm . Entry to the event is free.
