Mitcham Korfball Club took a big step towards defending their National League Premier Division title, winning their crucial showdown 16-15 against Kwiek.

 

Mitcham, who had been level on points with Kent team Kwiek at the top of the league going into the match, secured a three-goal lead by half-time, with Steve Green having scored five times in open play. In the second half, Mitcham, despite retaining their lead, then conceded four penalties to let Kwiek back into the match. With less that 90 seconds remaining Kwiek scored again to take their deficit to within one goal. However, after three further Kwiek shots, a crucial interception from Carly Holness meant that Mitcham could see out the last few seconds and win the match.

 

The result means that Mitcham now only have to defeat mid-table Invicta Sharks to retain the league title.

 

Kwiek drop to third place in the table, being overtaken by London side Trojans who defeated Nottingham 16-9, although both the second and third-placed teams will earn a place in the Europa Shield competition. The two teams play each other in the final match of the season.

 

In Division 1, Croydon sealed the title and promotion back to the top flight after a one-year absence, following a 18-14 win over Cambridge City. North Downs dropped a point in their 14-14 draw away to Cambridge Tigers, which gives the advantage back to Norwich Knights in the race for second place and a promotion/relegation playoff, with only one round of games remaining. However, the Knights have a tough final match away to Croydon.
