Local Rower selected for GB World U23 team

18th July 2007

A young rower from Somerset has been selected to represent Great Britain at the World U23 Regatta in Strathclyde, Scotland later this month. Cameron Nichol, from Glastonbury, has been called-up to the men's coxless four, which he will be joined by Burford's Olly Moore, Surbiton's Mohamed Sbihi and Malvern's Colin Scott. He is a student at the University of London. The World U23 Championships are used as an international stage on which to develop promising athletes for the senior teams. With the 2008 Olympics not far away, it is expected that attendance will be high as many countries seek to test young athletes for the coming Olympic year. Many of the selected athletes, such as Nichol's crewmate Mohamed Sbihi are graduates of the ARA's World Class Start Scheme, sponsored by Siemens, and which seeks to take raw recruits to the sport from year 11 at secondary school and first year at University and turn them into world-contenders. This year's World U23 Championships will be held at Strathclyde Park, in Scotland. Approximately 600 athletes from 40 countries usually take part in the event. This year, Britain has entered 12 boats, comprising 40 rowers in total. Racing is currently scheduled to take place from 26-29 July as follows: Heats - 26th Repechages - 27th Semi-finals - 28th Finals - 29th
