Winning an Irish title in any sport is a great achievement, however last weekend Newtownard’s girl Sarah Brashaw went one better, by winning two Irish titles at the Irish Karate Championships held in the National Basketball Arena in Tallagh.
Fresh from her outing last month at the WUKO World championships in Venice, Sarah had prepared well for this competition. In the morning session she claimed gold in the girls under fourteen category with a great performance of second dan kata Jion. After lunch she doubled her gold by winning the ‘expert parent and child kata’ with her dad David, narrowly beating Joe Smyth and his world silver medallist daughter Aoife.
Local coach Sam Lewis was delighted 'It was brilliant for Sarah to win these titles, especially after training so hard for the recent world championships.'
In addition to Sarah’s medals newcomer to the club Chloe Mackenzie from Antrim, fought her way superbly to her first Irish title, not dropping a point in any match.
In the under twelve orange belt kumite Bangor girl Jackie Taggart bagged another gold for the club, winning in her final convincingly by four to one.
Levi Kane proved she is still getting better and better, winning silvers in both the kumite and individual kata events and in the under twelve boys kumite Sam Stevenson battled his way to a super bronze. Coach Lewis added 'I am delighted with everyone's performance. We could not have asked for better performances at such a big tournament.'
