Gold for Leonardo

18th February 2009

University of Bath Sociology student and judo player Ed Leonardo won gold in the Portuguese Federation Senior Open in Portimao.

Leonardo was awarded the Santander Abbey scholarship at last year’s University of Bath Blues Awards Evening. He won all four of his contests in Portimao, the Algarve, three of them through Ippons.

Trooper Emmanuel Nartey, a member of the Army elite judo squad based at TeamBath, was in action at the OTP Bank Hungaria World Cup in Budapest. Competing for Ghana, he won his opening under-73kg contest, but then lost to France’s Mohamed Riad.

Maja Ursic secured fifth place in the under-63kg class at the women’s World Cup in Vienna. She won her opening two preliminary round contests before losing to Elisabeth Willeboordse of the Netherlands.

That put her through to the repechage, where she won her next contest, before losing the bronze medal match to fellow Slovenian Urska Zolnir. Ursic is a student on the Foundation Degree in Sports Performance, Block Route.
