Pair prepare for world judo championships
24th August 2009Two TeamBath judo players will be in action at the World Championships, which take place in Rotterdam later this week.
Emmanuel Nartey represents Ghana at the championships while Abbas Salihu fights for Nigeria.
Both are members of the British Army and both compete in the under-73kg class – raising the possibility that they could face each other at some stage in Rotterdam.
Nartey competes at his third world championships, while Salihu makes his world championships debut.
Both will be coached by University of Bath head coach Juergen Klinger at the championships. The championships run from Wednesday (26 August) through to 30 August, with the under-73kg class taking place on Thursday (27 August).
Meanwhile Kate Walker (under-63kg), Gemma Gibbons (under-70kg), Sian Wilson (under-78kg), Jan Gosiewski (under-73kg), Tom Reed (under-81kg) and Andy Burns (under-90kg) are GB reserves for the world championships.
Klinger said: “This shows we’ve got a good foundation here at the University of Bath and that the programme is moving forward.
“We hope this time next year that these six players will be number one in this country, rather than the reserves.”
