Judo pair make world champs exits

27th August 2009

TeamBath judo players Emmanuel Nartey and Abbas Salihu both missed out on the medal at the World Championships in Rotterdam.

The pair, who serve in the British Army and train at the University of Bath, were both competing in the under-73kg class at the championships.

Ghanaian Nartey, contesting his third world championships, won his opening bout against Jordan’s Ahmad Alathameen today (Thursday).

That set up a second round contest against France’s Gilles Bonhomme, the bronze medallist at this year’s European Championships. The Frenchman won with an Ippon score with a minute of the contest remaining.

Salihu, a 27-year-old Nigerian competing at his first World Championships, lost a tough opening round contest to Romania’s Costel Danculea.
