Germany produced a stunning display of high class shooting to reach the final of the FSB Women’s European Wheelchair Basketball Championships at the expense of Great Britain.
Playing in front of a raucous crowd Germany signalled their intent with an audacious reverse lay-up from the number 10 forward Geshe Shunemann. As relaxed as Germany were, Great Britain were the polar opposite, turning the ball over in transition. Germany seized on this and punished them with unerring efficiency, the score at the end of the first quarter 25-4.
The Germans continued to play high class basketball whilst Great Britain couldn't find any rhythm in offence. The turnover count carried on to rise, as did the German score, with Great Britain being left behind at half-time, down 48-9.
Great Britain started the second half playing mainly for pride. They still found it difficult to breakthrough the German defence, being forced into outside shooting, Clare strange duly obliged scoring 12 points overall in the game. Germany still scored at will leading 64-21 at the end of the quarter.
With the match in the German’s hands in the final quarter the game |petered out much to the disappointment of the crowd. The British women will be left to wonder what could have been if they had got off to a stronger start, however, much credit must be given to the accuracy of the Germans shooting, scoring a staggering 63% of their efforts at the basket.
Final score - 83-30
Great Britain will now take on France to claim the bronze medal.
