TWO goals from open play helped England Under-18 girls to victory in their opening match of the UK School Games in Wales on Friday, the team beating their Welsh rivals 2-0 at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff.

Reading youngster Jenna Woolven settled the team with an early goal in the fifth minute, and they held their lead comfortably for the rest of the half with goalkeeper Sabbie Heesh from Belper making several key saves.

Mid-way through the second half, England doubled their lead with sub Holly Payne scoring in the 52nd minute, the Leicester player scoring from open play after some poor Wales defending.

With a win over the Tournament hosts under their belt, England Under-18s will go into tomorrow’s clash with Ulster full of confidence, but Team Manager Melissa Bennett is taking nothing for granted.

“We were pleased to get a win under our belts,” she said. “But we made some errors which we need to address before then, but it was a good start to beat Wales.

“It was a good performance, and good to get an early goal which settled the girls in. But they were both from open play – we also had eight corners which were not converted, and that’s something else to improve on ahead of the other games.”

Saturday’s clash with Ulster Under-18s begins at 1pm, while they complete their fixtures on Sunday with a match against Scotland on Sunday at noon.
