ENGLAND will take on Scotland in the final of the Under-18 Girls UK School Games after they cruised past Ulster in their second match of the Tournament at the Wales Institute of Sport in Cardiff on Saturday.

Sunday’s final clash will see England hoping to replicate the form they showed in overcoming Ulster, where they looked much stronger and more confident than their opening day match against Wales on Friday.

Southgate youngster Emma O’Nein put England into the lead after just four minutes. A good attacking build up led to her flicking home from close range in front of goal, and from then on England looked likely to add further to their tally.

Ulster defended well for the rest of the half – but it was not long into the second period that the breakthrough came for England. Firebrands’ Georgia Rawlinson powered the ball into the bottom left corner at a penalty corner to double their lead on 38 minutes – but just a matter of seconds later they had further extended their lead.

This time it was Southgate’s Alice Madden who scored from open play with a deflection in front of goal following a good cross from Emily Atkinson. With a three-goal cushion, England took their foot off the gas, and held their rivals at bay comfortably.

“It was a much improved performance from the girls,” said team manager Melissa Bennett. “The head coach is very happy with the way they have played. They’ve put into action what they were asked to do following Friday’s performance.

“We will now review today’s game on the video and talk to the girls. We can’t afford to be complacent because tomorrow’s game against Scotland is effectively the gold medal match.”

In other action, Scotland beat hosts Wales 2-1 to set up a thrilling contest against England tomorrow (noon start).
