On Sunday 27th of September 2009, in association with Cambridge City Council and LIVING SPORT, Rounders England delivered the first ‘Rounders in the Park: Cambridge Festival’ on Parker’s Piece. The event included a mixed tournament for eight local teams, followed by a community taster session, and was a resounding success.
The glorious sunshine, combined with picturesque surroundings provided the perfect setting for over seventy people to enjoy playing some very exciting and competitive rounders in the centre of Cambridge. Participating teams came from a variety of different groups, including Abcam Plc representing the Cambridge Science Park, the Zoology Department from the University, and PE Staff from Comberton Village College – showing the kids how it’s done!
The teams were split into two groups and there were some very strong performances, with ‘The Cambridge Assessments’ setting the standard in group one, finishing the preliminary stage unbeaten. Group two was a much tighter affair, with three teams finishing on equal points at the top of the table. Ultimately ‘Efficiency Agenda’ were announced as group winners, having scored more rounders than ‘The Independents’ and ‘Zoology’.
The final between the winning teams from each group was a similarly close encounter, with ‘The Cambridge Assessments’ scoring seven rounders in the first innings, and the ‘Efficiency Agenda’ team falling tantalisingly close in reply with six. ‘The Cambridge Assessments’ therefore were duly crowned winners of the first Cambridge Rounders Festival, and were led up to receive their Rounders England medals by team captain Caroline Hodgson. They will no doubt be looking to continue their unbeaten run next year at the 2nd Annual Event – which we hope will build on the success of 2009 to present an even bigger spectacle, with more teams involved.
In addition to the Festival, Rounders England, Cambridge City Council and LIVING SPORT are currently working on several development initiatives to create a sound working infrastructure for further rounders activity across the county. Coaching and officiating courses have therefore been organised, with the first UKCC Level One Rounders Coaching Course taking place on the 15th of November and 6th of December 2009 at Cambridge Regional College.
The main target is to create a network of teams and community clubs to play on a regular basis in a friendly league structure throughout next summer. We are therefore looking for volunteers to help drive this project forward, and who we will support through multiple courses and workshops.
