Thousands enjoy top-flight international sport at University
20th October 2009Almost 5000 spectators watched last week’s feast of top-flight international sport at the University of Bath.
The University hosted three international matches at the Sports Training Village, with England’s netballers taking on world champions Australia on (Tuesday) 13th October and Commonwealth Champions New Zealand on Thursday (15th October). Five TeamBath players featured for England.
The week’s action reached a grand finale as England’s badminton players battled out an international match against Japan on Friday (16th October) night.
Michael Hoch, Chief Operating Officer at the University of Bath’s Department of Sports Development, said: “It was fantastic for the University to host three major international fixtures in the space of a week.
“All three were well supported and there was a terrific atmosphere here, as well as some outstanding action. We certainly aim to host similar events in the future.
“We worked closely with the governing bodies for netball and badminton,” he added. “I would particularly like to thank everyone involved in organising and running the events, both our own members of staff and our volunteers, for going the extra mile to make them such a big success.”
The University of Bath has a strong track record of hosting major sporting events, including the 1995 European Youth Olympic Days, the 2004 British University Games and the 2006 British Transplant Games. The University also jointly hosted the 2008 UK School Games.
