Andy Murray knocked out of French Open quarter-finals

6th June 2012

Andy Murray's French Open campaign ended today after he lost out to David Ferrer (ESP) in the quarter-finals of the men's singles 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-2 on the clay of Suzanne Lenglen.

In the opening set Murray began slowly and was trailing 4-1. After having seven chances to break and only converting once, the British No.1 started to fight back. However it was the sixth seeded Spaniard who clinched it by remaining consistent and serving strongly

The second set was closely fought and eventually decided in a tie-break. Murray grabbed the early lead in the breaker and took the set to even after an unforced error from Ferrer's ground-shot.

After a rain delay the third set was underway but Murray's crosscourt forehand failed him on one to many occasions and broke down in consistency. Ferrer sensed the weakness and started to apply the pressure and as a result Murray hit 17 unforced errors.

In the fourth and deciding set Murray continued to struggle with his forehand and Ferrer raced ahead and in 36 minutes took the set and his place in the semi-finals.

There was better news in the boys' singles as unseeded Kyle Edmund defeated Italian second seed Gianluigi Quinzi 7-6(1), 1-6, 6-4. Liam Broady was also in action but was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by Noah Rubin (USA).
