Heather Watson blasts into round two at Wimbledon

25th June 2012

Heather Watson is into round two of the women's singles at Wimbledon after an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over Iveta Benesova on Centre Court on Monday evening.

Making her debut on the main show court the 20 year old was unphased as she blasted her way through her Czech opponent in an hour and a half to set up a round two meeting with Jamie Hampton of USA.

"I was very pleased with how I played today," said a beaming Watson after the match."I just has so much fun out there. I was pleased that we got put on Centre, the crowd was awesome, I kept getting tingles.

"I'm very pleased with my first round win, but I'm not satisfied with just a first round. I'm looking forward to my next match, I'm looking to go deep into the tournament and not settle for one win."

Earlier in the day there was a strong performance from another British youngster as 18 year old Oli Golding stretched Igor Andreev all the way in a four set defeat on Court 2.

The British player, who was the youngest and lowest ranked in the men's singles played some aggressive tennis before eventually falling 1-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(7), 7-5 to his experienced Russian opponent.

Golding was disappointed with his loss after the match: "I'm obviously upset because I had chances, and I was in the match.  I mean, maybe on a different day with a little bit of luck I'd win one of those two tiebreaks and I'm two sets to one, two sets to love up.

"I think I think it was a little bit unfortunate today, and he was maybe a little bit more experienced than me, as well."

British world No.212 Johanna Konta was another British youngster to put up a spirited performance, as she took on Christina Mchale, the American 28th seed, on Court 17.

The 21 year old fought back from 3-5 down in the final set and is level with the American at 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-7 with the match due to resume on Tuesday.

There was also narrow defeats for Josh Goodall, losing out 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 in the men's singles, and Naomi Broady, beaten 6-4, 7-6(4) by Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain.

In the men's doubles Jamie Murray & Eric Butorac were leading Andre Begemann & Igor Zelenay 7-6(5), 7-6(3), 2-2 before bad light stopped play. Dominic Inglot & Treat Huey were also up, leading 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 over Jonathan Erlich & Andy Ram when their match was also suspended.

Tuesday at SW19 is scheduled to see the completion of the matches featuring Konta, Inglot and Jamie Murray, as well as the singles matches for Andy Murray, Jamie Baker, James Ward, Anne Keothavong, Laura Robson and Elena Baltacha.
