Britons progress at AEGON GB Pro-Series Foxhills
18th July 2012
Tuesday at Foxhills saw the completion of qualifying together with the first round of main draw singles. On a bright sunny day, play started earlier to catch up with the matches delayed on Monday.
Seven of the eight seeds in qualifying all won through to the main draw including Jade Windley, Anna Fitzpatrick, Nicola Slater and Alicia Barnett, the latter recovering from a first set loss to beat Germany’s Michaela Frlicka 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
There was nearly an early shock in the main draw when top seed Sarah Gronert, lost the first set to Finland’s Piia Suomalainen, but the German ranked 169 in the world recovered to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
All eight seeds have made it through to the second round with Naomi Broady beating Mexican qualifier Nadia Abdala 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Nicola Slater, playing her second match of the day after qualifying in the morning, beat Emily Webley-Smith 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, whilst the other British seeds Mel South (4) and Tara Moore (7) both won through in straight sets.
Daneika Borthwick, had an excellent win over Japan’s Chiaki Okadue, ranked 410 in the world, 6-1, 6-4, as did Lisa Whybourn with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Anais Laurendon (FRA) 6-3, 6-3.
Rain late in the day thwarted completion of some of the late doubles matches, but the event is very close to being back on track with play scheduled for a 10.00am start on Wednesday.
