Elena Baltacha carries Olympic Torch

20th July 2012

British tennis star Elena Baltacha was cheered on by packed crowds when she carried the London 2012 Olympic Torch in St Peter's, Kent on Thursday.

Baltacha, who will be competing in singles and doubles for Team GB when the tennis event gets underway on 28th July, admitted it had been an emotional experience.

"A few of the people who went before me were a bit teary and I thought "I'll be fine" but as soon as my torch was lit I was crying my eyes out! It was a wonderful feeling and it's fantastic that so many people turned out to see us all. I think it's great that people all over the country are getting excited about the Olympics. It's a big honour to carry the Torch and it's something I'll remember forever."

Current British No.4 Baltacha has been representing Great Britain in tennis for over ten years and was nominated to carry the torch by the Lawn Tennis Association. Oli Golding and British No.1 Andy Murray will follow in Baltacha's footsteps and carry the torch next week.
