Liam Broady into junior US Open quarter-finals

7th September 2012

Liam Broady is into the quarter-finals of the boys' singles and Kyle Edmund is into the semi-finals of the boys' doubles at the US Open in New York.

The weather affected tournament meant the British juniors who remained in the singles event were forced to play both their second and third round singles matches on Thursday at Flushing Meadows.

Broady, the 13th seed, defeated Finland's Herkko Pollanen 6-1, 7-5 in round two and then France's Maxime Hamou 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 in round three to set up a quarter-final against Wayne Montgomery of South Africa.

Kyle Edmund won his second round match 7-6(5), 6-4 against Shotaro Goto of Japan but was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by the second seed and junior Wimbledon champion Filip Peliwo in round three.

However Edmund, partnering Frederico Ferreira Silva of Portugal, is into the semi-finals of the boys' doubles, having won three matches including a 7-5, 6-4 win over the American second seeds in the quarter-finals. The pair now meet Nishioka (JPN) & Herreros (PER) in the semi-finals.

Joshua Ward Hibbert went out in round two of the singles, beaten 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 by Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka.

The matches involving Broady and Edmund are the only matches with British involvement on Friday in New York with Andy Murray's men's singles semi-final against Tomas Berdych taking place on Saturday.
