Heather Watson wins opening round at Australian Open
14th January 2013
British No.1 Heather Watson began her Australian Open campaign with a three set battle, coming back from a set down to beat world No.91 Alexandra Cadantu.
World No.50 Watson sealed her second round place in Melbourne Park with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over the Romanian in just under two and a half hours.
Speaking after the match, Watson, 20, said: "At the beginning I definitely wasn't there. I wasn't playing well. I didn't have much energy today."
Watson added: "I definitely expected myself to win today. I've had some tough draws in the past, and I knew it was a big opportunity today. I didn't want to waste it. But at the same time I didn't want to get frustrated with myself if some things weren't going so well because that just wouldn't help me out there on the court."
In round two Watson plays Ksenia Pervak of Kazakhstan.
