Andy Murray into second round of Australian Open

16th January 2013

Andy Murray began his Australian Open campaign with a straight sets win over Robin Haase in Melbourne Park.

The British world No.3 overcame the Dutchman 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 in just over one and a half hours.

“It was a good start,” said Murray after the match. “It was very different conditions to what it's been the last four, five days. So the court was playing much different. Bouncing a lot higher. It's much livelier. I thought I did a pretty good job from the start of dictating the points and not giving him too many freebies.”

Murray, the 2012 US Open champion, plays Joao Sousa of Portugal in the second round.

Laura Robson seals first round win in Australia

Laura Robson opened her 2012 Australian Open with an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win over American Melanie Oudin.

Oudin, the 2012 Aegon Classic champion, struggled against the British No.2, who kept the rallies short with some hard hitting groundstrokes.

Robson, goes on to face former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

The left hander, who turns 19 later this month, was twice a junior finalist in Melbourne and last year came through qualifying before missing out to former World No.1 Jelena Jankovic in round one.

Jamie Baker misses out in opening round

Jamie Baker missed out on progressing further in Melbourne Park after a 7-6(5), 7-5, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Czech Lukas Rosol.

Baker who came through three round of qualifying, had the opportunity to serve for the first two sets but could not close them out.
