Andy Murray in Australian Open quarter-finals

21st January 2013

British No.1 Andy Murray is through to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open after a 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 win over Gilles Simon in Melbourne Park.

Murray, who is yet to drop a set in the first Grand Slam of the year, defeated the Frenchman in one hour and 35 minutes on Hisense Arena to seal his place in the final eight.

Murray plays another Frenchman next, world No.36 Jeremy Chardy who 25 year-old Murray has beaten four times in their five encounters.

Speaking about his quarter-final opponent Murray said: "I normally play quite well against him.  But he's playing good tennis. I mean, he's had some big wins this week. He serves well. He's very aggressive off his forehand. His backhand is his weaker side, for sure. He hits a lot of slice, doesn't come over it too much.  He likes to come forward.

He can be erratic. But when his game is on, like it's been the last few rounds, he's a very tough player to play because he doesn't give you too much rhythm. And, yeah, he really goes for it."

Juniors
Harriet Dart and Katy Dunne have both progressed to the second round of the girls’ doubles after opening round success in their respective matches. Dunne also saw success in the first round of the girls' singles defeating Italian Giulia Pairone 6-1, 6-2.
