Ed Corrie to face Freddie Nielsen

1st March 2013

Ed Corrie has reached his fourth consecutive Aegon GB Pro-Series final after a straight sets win over Richard Gabb in Cardiff.

Corrie, 25, defeated Gabb 6-2, 6-4 in the semi-finals to set up a title contest against 2012 Wimbledon men’s doubles champion, Freddie Nielsen.

“That was the best match I have played so far this week” said Corrie after his match. “Richard played very well so I was pleased to come through in two sets.”

Corrie, who has already claimed titles in Preston, Wirral and finished as the runner-up in Sheffield, commented on his upcoming match against Nielsen:

“Freddie is a very good player. He has been playing in ATP events mostly this year so it will be a tough match. I will have to start well and play a good match. This is my fourth final in a row this year. My hard work at Gosling seems to be paying off.”

Nielsen, who has chosen to play in Cardiff to secure more match practice on indoor hard courts, sealed his place in the final after defeating Lewis Burton 6-4, 6-2.

“It feels good to be in the final” Nielsen commented. “In my semi-final I felt in control and was serving well. I didn’t feel much pressure. Ed is obviously in great shape and playing well and deserves to be in the final, but to me it doesn’t matter who is on the other side of the net, I feel I have been playing well.”

Nielsen, who teamed up with Britain’s Joshua Ward-Hibbert for the men’s doubles event, fell to Corrie and Neal Skupski in the semi-finals on Thursday.

“Obviously I am disappointed to have lost in the doubles, that’s just the way things go sometimes, but it has been a lot of fun playing with Josh this week. We met a few years ago in Spain which is how we ended playing together this week.”

Sean Thornley & David Rice went on to defeat Corrie & Skupski 6-1, 7-5 in the men’s doubles final to claim the title.
