Andy Murray battles past Ferrer to win in Miami

31st March 2013

Andy Murray defeated David Ferrer 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(1) in an enthralling final to take the men's singles title in Miami and ensure he moves up to No.2 in the world when Monday's rankings are published.

In an epic match in hot, humid and windy conditions in Key Biscayne the British No.1 recovered from losing the first five games to edge his Spanish opponent in a gruelling final.

"It was such a tough match," said Murray, who was ranked number two for three weeks in 2009, the same year he first won in Miami."It could have gone either way, both of us were struggling physically at the end. It's so tough against him. He has a great attitude, he's a great fighter. I am sure we will have more tough matches in the future."

Meanwhile in the women's doubles 19 year-old Briton Laura Robson and partner Lisa Raymond, 39, ended a fantastic week by finishing runners-up to Nadia Petrova and Katarina Srebotnik in the final, with the latter pair winning 6-1, 7-6.

Robson and Raymond were beaten in one hour and 10 minutes with their opponents converting five from 10 break points to take the title.

For Robson it was a first WTA doubles final appearence whilst Raymond has won 79 doubles tournaments, including six Grand Slam titles, since turning professional in 1993.
