Laura Robson levels Great Britain to 1-1 in Fed Cup tie
20th April 2013
British No.1 Laura Robson brought Great Britain level to 1-1 in their Fed Cup by BNP Paribas tie against Argentina in the World Group II promotional play-off with victory over Florencia Molinero in Buenos Aires.
Robson won 6-1, 6-1 on the clay in one hour and 10 minutes after Paula Ormaechea beat Johanna Konta 6-3, 6-2 in the opening rubber at the Mery Terán De Weiss Stadium.
After the match, Konta said: “It was a great experience being out there today and a real honour to represent GB. I didn’t get off to the best of starts but found my rhythm after the first four games and played better after that. I really hope Laura can level up and we can win the tie tomorrow.”
In the second singles, Robson was in total command from 1-1 in the first set, winning 10 games in a row before dropping serve for the only time at 5-0 in the second. Robson said after: “I was very pleased with how I played. I stuck to my game plan and hitting some higher balls to her backhand and apart from a few double faults nothing to complain about. It’s 1-1 going into tomorrow, it’s going to be tough but we can totally do this.”
Aegon Fed Cup Team Captain Judy Murray reflected on the events of day one: “We are probably where we expected to be. Johanna played against a very tricky Paula Ormachea, the Argentinian No.1. Jo made a very good debut, not easy to come out at 10am against a partisan crowd with all that noise and their brass band. Then Laura absolutely destroyed Molinero to even things up and we’re looking forward to tomorrow, it’s all to play for. We’ll practice some more now before going out for dinner tonight.”
