2013 Belfort ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships

28th May 2013

The Great Britain Age-Group Team is in action this weekend at the 2013 Belfort ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships with just over 100 athletes preparing to take part on Saturday 1 June.

Thirteen of these British athletes competed at last year’s  2012 Vitoria Gasteiz ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championship, including Catherine Faux who put together a dominant gold-winning performance at last year’s race. Other return athletes of note include :-

  • Paul Lunn who won bronze in the 40-44 age group
  • Fry came 4th in the 50-54 age group
  • Peter Wilby came 5th in the 25-29 age group
  • Bud Johnston came 6th in the 50-54 age group

The event is scheduled to consist of a 4 km swim in a freshwater lake, a 110km bike and a 30 km run. Although due to forecasted bad weather conditions in the Presqu’ile du Malsaucy region of France, there is a contingency to reduce the swim to 3km or 1.5 km, or even cancel it for safety reasons.

The official decision on the swim distance will be made by the ITU and FFTRI should be known on the afternoon of Thursday 30 May.

Great Britain Age Group Team Manager, Tim Whitmarsh, said: “It’s going to be a fairly tough course including a climb on the cycle leg which has formed part of the Tour De France. The weather has been wintery for the last few weeks so our athletes are aware of possible changes and will need to remain focused to perform to the best of their abilities.”
