Parliamentary Rugby League Group awards Honorary Memberships
16th June 2013The Parliamentary Rugby League Group has made Spen Allison and Maurice Oldroyd Honorary Life Members of the Group.
Allison steps down as Chairman of BARLA this month; Oldroyd is a founder member of the Association and its current Patron. In becoming Honorary Life Members, they join Group founders David Hincliffe, Sir Ian McCartney; former Group Secretary Neil Turner; former House of Lords officer Peter Horsfall; and former RFL Chairman Richard Lewis.
Group Chairman and Vice President of BARLA, Leeds North West MP, Greg Mulholland said: “Honorary Life Membership of the Group is awarded to those we feel have given much to the game or have been an important part of the Group over many years. Spen and Maurice have done a great deal for the sport through BARLA and been longstanding Associate Members of the Group so our decision was straightforward.
“Their input as Associate Members, representing BARLA or as individuals, has been welcomed and I would not be surprised if they have attended more of our monthly meetings than many, if not all, Members.”
The Group, which started its 25th Year after its recent AGM, comprises over 70 Members of Parliament and has 35 Associate Members - 24 individuals, eight organisations, and three clubs. It meets on a monthly basis in the House of Commons when Parliament is sitting and has the sole remit to support the sport of rugby league football.
