Judo players miss out in medals in Kazan

Team Bath judo players missed out on the medals at the World University Games in Russia.
In the women’s under-70kg class, Megan Fletcher just missed out on a quarter-final berth in Kazan when she lost her round of 16 contest to Cuba’s Onix Cortes Aldama.
The bout went the full five minutes before the Cuban edged it with a late Yuko score. Cortes Aldama went on to take bronze overall.
Fletcher had earlier beaten Russia’s Margarita Gurtsieva with a contest winning Ippon score to set up the bout against Cortes Aldama.
Fletcher had a second chance of a medal through the repechage, but went down to Japan’s Asian Championships bronze medallist Karen Nunira. It meant Fletcher finished ninth overall.
In the men’s under-81kg class, University of Bath Business Administration graduate Tom Reed just missed out on progressing when he suffered a first round defeat to Russia’s Murat Khabachirov.
In women’s football, University of Bath graduate Grace McCatty played the full 90 minutes in Great Britain’s 5-1 win over Estonia in the team’s final preliminary round game. It means GB face the Republic of Ireland in the Thursday’s quarter-final.
In athletics, Irish athlete Jessie Barr, who is coached by Malcolm Arnold at the University of Bath, finished sixth in the 400m hurdles final
