Buckingham breaks away to win in Palamos

15th July 2013

Britain’s Mark Buckingham broke away on the bike leg at the ITU Palamos World Cup in Spain to win his first major international triathlon yesterday, 14 July.

The 28 year old from Holmfirth, who trains full time in Loughborough managed to break away on the bike and stay away from the rest of the field until the final kilometre of the run.

Buckingham, a former track runner, who came to triathlon via the trigold scheme, used his background to overcome Dmitry Polyanskiy (RUS) and Yegor Martynenko (UKR) in the final 300m sprint for the line and achieve his first ITU World Cup win.

He said: “The lead pack was going really slow [on the bike] and I thought why not go for it. One of my team mates from the French Grand Prix was there and he’s really strong so I thought this could work and we got away.

He added: “I don’t know how big the gap was but I knew it was going to be a tough run. I hung on, lucky I come from a track running background so I’ve got a bit of a kick and it definitely helped.”
