Andy Murray reaches round three in Flushing Meadows

Andy Murray defeated Argentina's Leonardo Mayer to reach the third round of the US Open in four sets.

Murray, the defending champion, dropped his first set of the tournament as he came through on the Louis Armstrong Stadium 7-5, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in two hours and 41 minutes.

He will face Germany's Florian Mayer in the last 32 on Sunday.

"I didn't feel like I served as well today as I did in the first match,” said Murray.“Different court, different conditions during the day."

I finished the match well today. I played well when I needed to - that's a good sign. I want to keep improving as the tournament goes on.

You don't want to play your best right at the beginning, so I hope I can get better."

Doubles

British doubles duo Colin Fleming & Jonny Marray overcame Ryan Harrison (USA) & Robert Lindstedt (SWE) in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round in Flushing Meadows.

Dominic Inglot & Treat Huey (PHI) also moved into round three as they defeated Daniele Bracciali (ITA) & Lukas Dlouhy (CZE) 6-3, 6-3.

Jamie Murray joined his compatriots in the last 16 with partner John Peers (AUS) with a 6-7(7), 7-5, 7-5 win over Feliciano Lopez (ESP) & Andre Sa (BRA).

Meanwhile Heather Watson & Vera Dushevina (RUS) were defeated by Sandra Klemenschits (AUT) & Andreja Klepac (SLO) in round one of the women’s doubles.

Juniors

In the junior event there was success for Isabelle Wallace and Thomas Colautti as they both won their opening round qualifying matches.
