Andy Murray to face Go Soeda in Australian Open

10th January 2014

No.4 seed Andy Murray has drawn Japan’s Go Soeda in the first round of the Australian Open, whilst Laura Robson faces No.18 seed Kirsten Flipkens. Wimbledon champion Murray will face the world No.112 for the first time in Melbourne on Monday or Tuesday.

It will also be the first time that Laura Robson takes on world No.19 Flipkens, who was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon in 2013. View the main draws Heather Watson moved into the final round of qualifying without losing a game after Stephanie Foretz Gacon retired with Watson leading 6-0, 2-0. Watson now takes on American Irina Falconi for a place in the main draw.

Watson said after her match: “That’s how I want to play. I came in with a different approach today. It was nice to get through the first match but now I’m feeling better I want to hit the shots that I’ve been practising – I want to hit them in the match too and I was just very pleased with how I was playing.” It was not to be for Johanna Konta as she fell to a 6-1, 6-2 defeat to Olga Savchuk (UKR).
