England Under-16 Boys rounded off their Four Nations Tournament fixtures in style on Friday, beating Belgium 6-2 to clinch the Bronze medal in Santander, Spain.
The match was hanging in the balance shortly after half time at 2-2, but a run of four goals in nine minutes – including a hat-trick from Sam Apoola – helped England clinch a deserved victory.
Head Coach Charlie Bannister said afterwards: “It was an excellent second half performance, punctuated by some wonderful goals gave England a well-deserved win.”
Woking’s Eddie Way gave England the lead from a ninth minute penalty corner, flicking to the goalkeeper’s left, and they held that advantage until half time.
But England fell asleep for a short time early in the second half, and Belgium added goals on 36 and 38 minutes from Loic Sidler and Nathan Robbrecht.
However, England kept their cool and levelled on 46 minutes, again Eddie Way scoring from a penalty corner.
Beeston’s Sam Apoola netted on 53 minutes, and again on 59 minutes after a textbook counter-attack following a failed Belgium penalty corner. He clinched his hat-trick on 61 minutes, and Cambridge City player Euan Gilmour bagged the final goal on 62 minutes from open play.

ENGLAND Under-18 Boys ended the Four Nations Tournament in disappointing style, losing 5-3 to the Netherlands after two injuries and a disallowed goal knocked them off their stride.
Having beaten the Dutch 2-1 earlier in the competition England were confident of a repeat performance, and they fought well enough in the first half, but injuries to two players left them stretched, and a disallowed goal led to frustrations setting in.
“We competed reasonably well in the first half where we were in contention,” said Head Coach Jody Paul. “The turning point came when we had a goal disallowed contentiously and the Netherlands then seized the game in the second half. With two injuries we were struggling to compete and ended up with the disappointment of losing having won in the pool game.
“Overall we have learned a lot about our players and there are some encouraging signs of younger players developing which should bode well as we prepare for the European Under-18s Tournament next year in Santander.”
Woking player Mat Ming scored again from the penalty spot after eight minutes to pull England level, and Southgate’s Nick Page made it 2-3 on 57 minutes from a penalty corner. Peter Scott added England’s third with two minutes left, but with a two-goal deficit still to make up time ran out.
