England Under-18 Girls matched their Dutch rivals for long periods of their latest Five Nations Tournament match, but they couldn’t claw their way back after conceding two early goals and lost out 3-1.
The Netherlands scored after three and six minutes as England struggled to find top gear quickly enough, and only some good goalkeeping from Katherine Somerville prevented them from scoring more.
Once into their stride England fought well, and Head Coach Andy Bradshaw said: “We’ve put in a really good second half performance and they showed a lot of character, creating a lot of opportunities and on a different day we could’ve got a result.
“I think we did enough work to get back on level terms but didn’t quite manage it. Our ability to put a side under pressure and come from behind was really good. The challenge for the final game against Spain tomorrow is to start quickly.”
Caillard scored on 41 minutes. A break down the right resulted in a free hit, which was drilled in for the East Grinstead player to deflect in.
England went in search of an equaliser and put the Netherlands under some great pressure, but a yellow card for Charlotte Daly was followed shortly after by a 66th minute Dutch goal which sealed the result.

Trailing by just one goal with ten minutes remaining, England Under-16 Girls conceded three late strikes and lost out 4-0 to the Netherland in their latest Five Nations Tournament clash at Beeston HC on Friday afternoon.
A late yellow card left England struggling to contain their rivals, and although they ended up losing the scoreline doesn’t reflect their performance.
“It was an excellent first half and the girls were competitive throughout,” said Head Coach Marc Bourhill. “We had to play with ten players for a time which left us exposed as they pushed forward. I feel the squad has made great progress since they first played the Dutch at Easter.”
Pien Sanders scored for the Netherlands from a penalty corner just two minutes before the break after England had defended their circle stoutly for much of the first period.
The match continued to be close through the second half, but the Netherlands broke the deadlock through Paula de Jong on 61 minutes, with Yibbi Jansen scoring from a penalty stroke on 66 minutes and Nina van der Marel adding the final goal on 67 minutes.
They will play Spain in their final match tomorrow at 3.30pm.
