Aegon Championships - Dimitrov, Hewitt Headline Day One

15th June 2015

Grigor Dimitrov will begin the defence of his Aegon Championships crown on Monday when he plays 2010 champion Sam Querrey in the final match on centre court. The Bulgarian sixth seed won the pair’s only previous meeting, in Washington 2013, but they have never met on grass.

Speaking at Saturday’s draw ceremony, Dimitrov said: ‘It was always my dream to win at Queen’s so I’m very proud of my achievement last year. The centre court here is one of my favourites in the world and I really enjoy this time of the year. Every time I come on the grass I have a special feeling, it suits the way I play and the way I move.’

Elsewhere on the opening day, four-time winner of this event Lleyton Hewitt will begin his quest for a record fifth title. The Australian, who is making his 16th and final appearance at the tournament, plays South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the second match on centre court.

Great Britain’s James Ward, a wildcard entry, plays 2014 Wimbledon semi-finalist Milos Raonic in the third match of the day. The Canadian third seed has not played a match on tour since Madrid in early May after suffering a foot injury.

Fernando Verdasco opens the centre court schedule against Roberto Bautista Agut, while Richard Gasquet takes on Simone Bolelli on Court 1.

Main draw doubles will also commence on Monday with Britain’s Jamie Murray and his partner John Peers playing Feliciano Lopez and Max Mirnyi on court 9.

Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka will all play their first round matches on Tuesday. Yen-Hsun Lu will be Murray’s opponent after he came through qualifying on Sunday.
