The English Golf Union was established in 1924 and is the governing body for male amateur golf in England.

Members of the English Golf Union include: the 34 County Golf Unions, all golf clubs affiliated to their County Union, all male playing members of those clubs irrespective of membership category (which totals around 730,000 golfers), and associate members.

The primary objective of the Union is to promote, administer and encourage amateur golf in England. In support of this directive it falls to the Union to:

  • maintain a uniform system of handicapping

  • arrange the English Championships along with international matches and other events

  • co-operate with the R&A, CONGU and other National Unions

  • safeguard the finances and develop and manage the affairs of the Union to the best advantage of the Union

In addition to the objectives listed above the Union provides an advisory service on most aspects of golf and oversees the newly introduced Associate Members Scheme.

The affairs of the Union are administered by an elected Council, which is made up of the Officers of the Union, Past Presidents, Representatives of the County Golf Unions and Associate Membership Representatives.

The majority of the Union’s income is generated from a small annual subscription which is included in each golf clubs member’s annual fee. This provides the funds to achieve and manage its affairs for the benefit of the club golfer.
